Art that speaks volumes

Born in Belgium, I was fortunate to grow up immersed in a world of creativity, thanks to my father, Leopold Scrayen, a world-renowned artist. From a young age, I was surrounded by the sights, sounds, and textures of the art world, often assisting my father on various projects. This early exposure nurtured my passion for artistic expression, and cultivated my love for intricate craftmenaship, especially wood carving.

In 1986, I made the move to Perth, Western Australia, where I continued to develop my skills and passion. One of my proudest achievements was contibuting to the creation of the replicas of both the Endeavour and the Duyfken. These projects required a deep understanding of historical techniques, and it was a privilege to apply my artistic ability to replicate the fine, intricate carvings that brought these vessels to life.

Beyond these maritime projects, I have been honored to work along side the Indigenous Noongar community, an experience that has profoundly shaped me. Exploring the richness of local culture, tradiitions, and storytelling has been an ongoing journey - one that has deepened my appreciation for the beauty of connection between art, people, and place

Today, I continue to persue my passion foro craftemanship and community, drawing inspiration from my Belgian roots, my father’s artistic legacy, and the diverse cultural landscape of Western Australia. Art, for me, is not just a medium but a way to connect stories - whether ancient or modern - and to celebrate the spirit of people and their shared histories.

As an artist, I research the subjects I want to create, like philosophy, religion, mythology, nature, or people. Then, I focus on a project and let the magic unfold.
